Dunman Char Siew Wanton Mee德明叉烧云吞面 @ Dunman Food Centre – Shiokness in the plate

There are two popular wanton stalls housed in Dunman Food Centre, at the lower deck, you can find the famous Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee luring its loyal customers, on the upper deck, Dunman Char Siew Wanton Mee – another wanton mee stall that too flexing its arms to entice the customers with its plates of alluring wanton noodles.

We tried both the stalls and here is our verdict. You can read our review on Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee here.

Dunman Char Siew Wanton Mee serves the same wanton mee but in a completely different style.

Topping is the usual char siew and boiled chye sim, the noodle do not have the usual yellowish eggy look but more pale yellow in look compared to many other wanton mee stalls. The four plates of noodle we ordered were all cooked to the al dente texture, it has the right firmness and yet springy noodle texture and was a pleasant to the taste buds.

The noodle was tossed with the sesame oil, soy sauce and same broth from the bowl of accompanied soup for the extra flavour, a spoonful of Chili sauce was served aside with the noodle, the bright red chili sauce is the killer here with its ferociously tongue burning kicks, the presentation and style reminded us the close resemblance of the famous Eng Wanton Mee – a stall with its legacy started from this humble food centre as well but has since grown into a well established restaurant along Tajor Katong Road.

Dunman Char Siew Wanton Mee may be slightly more tame with the seasoning compared to Eng Wanton Mee which is more robust in taste but the flavour is good enough to win our hearts over, the burning chili sauce somehow able to provide the “shiokness” which is something we don’t be able to feel it with its lower deck rival – Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee.

The wanton are filled with flavourful fillings though the char siew was just ordinary.

The fiercely chili sauce may pose a challenge for some but if you would like to enjoy a plate of good wanton noodle full with shiokness, Dunman Char Siew Wanton Mee will able to give you the edge over Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee from many aspects of a good wanton noodle, be it the noodle texture, seasoning and chili sauce or the delectable wanton.

The only setback we experienced with Dunman Char Siew Wanton Mee is the poor consistency in getting the right sweetness and flavour of the soup. The bowl of soup was tastier in the subsequent visit compared to our first visit a week before which was completely bland and mediocre, this is an area for the stall to pay more the attention since the noodle was tossed with the same base soup and that could affect the overall taste to some extent.

Our verdict
Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Mee may be captured a large pool of followers but our hearts are unequivocally leaning towards Dunman Char Siew Wanton Mee, we like the texture of the noodle, the sweating hot chili sauce and the overall satisfaction of the taste that we received from the plate of wanton mee.
